Josep Lluis Mateo

Josep Lluís Mateo was a guest professor at ETH Zurich from 1993 to 1995. He has been full professor of Architecture and Design since 2002.

Born in 1949 in Barcelona, Spain, he graduated in 1974 from the Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB). He gained his doctorate degree with distinction “cum laude” from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC). From 1996 to 2002, he was a professor at the ETSAB and has taught at numerous European and American universities. He has been scholar at the J. P. Getty Center in Los Angeles.

From 1981 to 1990, he was editor of Quaderns d’Arquitectura i Urbanisme magazine (Barcelona City Hall Prize for Visual Arts, International Union of Architects Prize).

In 1974, Josep Lluís Mateo set up his professional practice, which currently has a staff of 40 persons. Drawing on its origins in Barcelona’s rich architectural tradition, the practice’s activity has expanded globally. Relating the abstraction of the concept with the reality of the material is at the basis of both his architectural and his teaching activities. Mateo’s work in the fields of theory and design has, since he started out, been widely followed by the media and professional forums.
